Frida Kill – “City Gurl” Vinyl LP

Frida Kill’s music draws from familiar strands of New York City rock and punk history. Garage rock, avant-garde and funk mix into a campy style of post-punk performed by four women of marginalized backgrounds living in one of the most expensive cities in the world at a time when the rights of some of their cohorts are being threatened and taken away. The urgency in the messages of the songs slaps the listener in the face like the pungent aroma of sidewalk trash on a hot New York City summer day. Topics like abortion, grief, transphobia, mental health and the crushing rise in the cost of living are delivered with the urgent call for like-minded individuals to stand up for each other.

The underlying guitar grooves in Frida Kill songs have a familiarity going back to some CBGB and Max’s Kansas City bands of the late 70s but are embellished by new-wave post-punk guitar climaxes, all kept in time by minimalist ESG type drumbeats. Maria Lina brings larger than life vocal performances informed by stints in Tina Turner and X-Ray Spex cover bands.

On “City Gurl,” Frida Kill drop more knowledge than the average corporate lawyer! They are the only punk band in the world that can educate their audience about the perils of the dreaded Credit Default Swap. Yes, they also write songs about the Chinatown Bus, the chopped cheese and the bacon egg and cheese but this is a New York City band after all! Even though it’s only punk rock put some respect on Frida Kill’s name. They are “Queen(s) of the Thrill” goddamit but it’s still not a game!

Pop Music Fever Dream – “Songs For Emotion” Vinyl EP

Pop Music Fever Dream want to let you know that the internet and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race. Fear not, however, as Songs For Emotion’s cathartic absurdism is here to give you hope for a future that transcends the circumstances of our modern times.

Having listened to their recordings before witnessing Pop Music Fever Dream live, an impression formed in our minds of a band that may not enjoy the live show because the pristine quality of their recordings may  be difficult to replicate. We are happy to report that this could not be further from the truth. One of the first times we met Pop Music Fever Dream was over lunch with two of the band members one December afternoon. We discussed many of the themes on the EP: Hope, love, emotion, the internet, and the dream of the ’60s. Fast forward to their show that night, and PMFD unleashed a captivating and enrapturing performance. Nicole thrashes herself into the crowd during a no wave anti-solo, Tim hoisting themself above the crowd standing up on outstretched hands as if they were a biblical figure, and the overall intensity of the band performing as if they were all playing right up to the end of the world. We could not reconcile that Tim  was the same individual we had a pleasant afternoon coffee with earlier in the day. It was right then and there Insecurity Hits determined that Songs For Emotion would be the eighth release in our catalog.

Songs For Emotion is a remarkable recording that boasts impressive production qualities and dynamic range. Tim’s vocal delivery at times reminds us of the talking-singing style of New York City rock legends Lou Reed, Julian Casablancas, and Ezra Koenig. Thrown in with these musical characteristics are the pop-sensibilities, humor, and concise noise outbursts closely noted to bands like Sonic Youth and Mission of Burma. Pop Music Fever Dream have a message and a point of view that is singular to their experience of being queer and trans in America yet common to everyone in today’s society. Pop Music Fever Dream command you to act in solidarity towards the cause of equality, put the phone down, and drop the needle on a Songs For Emotion vinyl record!!! – Insecurity Hits
