Genre Is Death destroy limitation….Their minimalist sound, presentation and performance rather than acting as a typecasting influence, provides an expansive backdrop from which their connection with each other can be fully explored. Their presence as a two-piece band on stage evokes comparisons to the English-American rock duo The Kills, who cultivated a powerful stage presence through performances that were as intimate as they were raucous. The seamless execution of Tayler Lee’s voice/bass and Ty Varesi’s voice/guitar is reminiscent of early Sleater-Kinney songs that featured Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein’s interwoven vocal delivery that felt more like a conversation between the conscious and subconscious mind than one between two people. Connection isn’t a one dimensional concept to Varesi and Lee. Intricate guitar/bass lines and vocal call/response give way on many occasions to menacing wall of sound moments that evoke early Sonic Youth. More rhythmically open passages bring about a playfulness reminiscent of Teenage Jesus and the Jerks performances. Genre Is Death make connection captivating. They induce audiences to mosh, make-out or watch in rapt attention as they perform their art without clenching a muscle. They are New York City. They are Atlanta. They are post-punk. They are no-wave. They are garage rock. They are avant-garde. They are rock n’ roll without even trying!
